Buy World Of Hyatt Points At 1.68 Cents Each

Loyalty members can typically buy a minimum of 1,000 World of Hyatt points for $24 or 2.4 cents per point but with the 30% discount, the price is now at $16.80 for every 1,000 points or 1.68 cents per point.

However, each member can only buy up to 55,000 points per calendar year although that limit can be increased during special promotions.

Is Buying Points A Good Idea?

Generally, most points and miles experts wouldn’t encourage buying points just because there’s a promotion. Make sure that you have a solid reason why you’re buying points. Here are two examples:

  • You’re short of points that’s needed to book the award that you really want
  • Buying points for an award is cheaper than paying in cash

Pricing Examples

We’ve looked up a few award stays at the World of Hyatt website made some comparisons between the cash price and the cash value of the discounted award price.

Grand Hyatt Singapore

The Grand Hyatt Singapore is perfect for those who want to visit the Marina Bay Sands, Merlion Park, and other amazing destinations in Singapore.

Now, let’s take a look at the Grand Hyatt Singapore’s price comparisons. The cash price for a 1 King Bed room is $412.38 after taxes and fees.

Meanwhile, the regular award price costs 20,000 points at 24 cents each or $480 but after factoring in the 30% discount, 20,000 points at 1.68 cents each would now only cost $336. You have saved $76 for a 42 square meter room in the heart of Singapore.

Hyatt House New York/Chelsea

The regular award price is also 20,000 points or $480 which is actually a pretty good deal already since it’s cheaper than the cash price. But let’s apply the 30% discount, and you would even have a lower price of $336. That’s $173.27 in savings!

Hyatt Grand Central NYC

Buying World of Hyatt points at a 30% discount for award stays would mostly result in big savings compared to paying in cash.

However, there are some stays where the cash price is cheaper than the award price even with the 30% discount applies. Let’s take the Hyatt Grand Central NYC as an example where the cash price for a 1 Queen bed is $335.14.

The award price is for the same room is 20,000 points or $480 but after applying the 30% discount, you’d now get $336 dollars. Event though it’s only a one-dollar difference, the cash price is still cheaper which means that buying points may or may not be a good idea.

How To Earn Hyatt Points Without Buying

As mentioned above, buying points is kind of a gray area for most points enthusiasts. The best way to earn World of Hyatt points is through co-branded credit cards and transfer partners.

World of Hyatt Credit Cards

There are currently two co-branded Hyatt cards and these are:

The World of Hyatt Credit Card

The personal version comes with 30,000 bonus World of Hyatt points for new cardholders if they’re able to spend $3,000 within three months of card membership.

Plus, you also get to earn 2 bonus points per dollar of up to $15,000 in purchases within the first six months of card membership. This means you can earn up to 30,000 bonus points.

For the regular rewards categories, you will also earn a total of 9 points per $1 spent at Hyatt properties: 5 Base Points per $1 as a World of Hyatt member + 4 points per $1 when you use your World of Hyatt Credit Card at Hyatt hotels.

The World of Hyatt Business Credit Card

The World of Hyatt Business Credit Card comes with a welcome bonus of 60,000 Bonus Points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening.

Here are the reward categories below:

  • 9x points on Hyatt stays and experiences: 5 Base Points per $1 as a World of Hyatt member + 4 points per $1 when you use your World of Hyatt Credit Card at Hyatt hotels
  • 2x points on fitness club and gym memberships
  • 2x bonus points (adaptive accelerator) on your top 3 spending categories (valid through December 2023),  then your top 2 spending categories each quarter.
  • 2 Bonus Points per $1 spent on fitness club and gym memberships
  • 1 point per dollar on all other purchases

Transfer Partners

Another way of earning Hyatt points is through transfer partners. For example, Chase Ultimate Rewards can be transferred to Hyatt points at a 1:1 ratio.

This means that you need to have cards that earn Chase points like the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve or the Chase Ink Business Preferred Card.

Bottomline

As a general rule, don’t rush into buying points just because there’s a discount. Always have a plan in mind and compare cash prices and award prices (with the30% discount) to see if it’s worth buying those points.

Also, try to go for the expensive rooms because you’ll see bigger price gaps between the cash price and the discounted award price.
