Tired of staying home already? After all, it has been over a year since the pandemic forced us to self-isolate. We had to abandon international travel for a while. Right now, the majority of people have one burning question in mind: Which countries can vaccinated Americans visit?
Not only that, where can vaccinated people travel this summer in general? Before you set off on a journey, you should (obviously) understand in what countries are accepted vaccinated Americans.
For the last year, the number of vaccinated people in the U.S. increased significantly. As of June 2021, over 50% (54% to be exact) of Americans are now vaccinated. This is great because our lives can soon come back to normal. The current U.S. president and his administration are working towards vaccinating 70% of the American citizens until the fourth of July.
The good news is the United States of America is not the only country working towards achieving a similar goal.
All that hard effort led more countries to reopen their borders to vaccinated travelers, especially now in the summer season. After all, we’ve all been through a lot for more than twelve months, and we deserve quality time away from our daily routines, right?
So, if you already had your vaccine, you might be wondering, “What countries are allowing vaccinated foreign residents such as myself.” Many popular tourist destinations in South America, such as Mexico and Brazil, are actually open for both vaccinated and non-vaccinated Americans.
However, if you are in the mood for a more distant trip, you shouldn’t worry. There are plenty of interesting countries open for tourists just like you. For example, France and Denmark are two of the latest participants in that move.
What countries require vaccines to travel? The European Union still has not confirmed the full implementation of their reopening plan, but France and Denmark followed Greece and several other European countries. Greece, for example, opened its borders on April 19th for vaccinated Americans and other countries followed this policy.
As we’ve already into the summer season, more and more European countries are reopening restaurants, attractions, and bars. It was about time they started welcoming foreign tourists after a year of economic adversity. In this article, we’ve outlined most of the “Great-to-visit countries”, and their current reopening status. You will also find out the entry requirements for foreign travelers.
But what about other destinations such as exotic islands and distant small countries located all around the world? The article will cast its net far and wide, to bring you which countries are open for vaccinated Americans aside from ones in Europe and South America. Now, let’s dive in travler!
Just remember that these information below only applies for US citizens traveling from the US. If you’re a US citizen traveling from another country, you need to check the health protocols between the country you’re traveling to and traveling from.
Mexico
One of the hottest destinations for U.S. travelers, Mexico’s borders are open to both vaccinated and non-vaccinated American tourists. You don’t have to show proof of a negative test or quarantine upon arrival. The only thing you need to complete before arrival is a health declaration form with a Q.R. code. Still, when you get to your accommodation, you may have to fill out a health questionnaire.
You can enter the country by air, but you can not enter it by land for nonessential reasons. Also, on your way back to the USA, don’t forget to take a Covid-19 PCR or antigen test. Whether you are vaccinated or not, you need to get tested no more than 72 hours before your flight.
Why would you visit Mexico? Most people go there for resorts such as Cancun, Punta Cana, Tulum, and many more. Yet, the rest of the country can offer you so much more. Local people are some of the friendliest in the world, and the food is wonderful. You can explore this country’s rich history and dive into the lush jungles and Mayan ruins that will take you long back in time.
France
France’s officially reopened its borders for vaccinated travelers from outside Europe. Unfortunately, 16 countries got banned from entering France, fortunately, the U.S. is not on this list.
You would be eligible for entry if you got vaccinated with one of the following EU-approved vaccinees: Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, or AstraZeneca. Bring your official proof of vaccination, and you are good to go. No need for quarantine protocols and Covid-19 tests.
For vaccinated parents who want to bring their children, those that are 11 years and older should have a negative PCR or antigen test. Children that are 11 years and below will be exempted from testing.
Meanwhile, unvaccinated travelers will need to present a negative PCR or antigen test 3 days before departure. If you are you planning to take unvaccinated children with you on the trip?
Why would you choose France? Paris is not only the City of Love but also a city with a rich history spanning over 2000 years.
However, the capital of France isn’t the only beautiful place you can visit in France. The City of Love is just warming up travelers for many more beautiful and romantic sightseeings that lay outside of it. And if you need an extra push to make France your travel destination for this summer, remember that it’s one of the best places to drink wine. French people offer high-quality wine and recommend drinking at least one glass per day!
Italy
Have you ever heard that Italians love American tourists? If you haven’t, you should know that there are several reasons why that statement is true. After all, Americans are generous and also the second-largest group of foreigners visiting Italy every year.
Can vaccinated Americans travel to Italy? On June 21, the Italian Government announced that US Citizens who can obtain a Green Pass can enter the country upon arrival without having to quarantine or isolate themselves. This means that they need proof of vaccination, a negative Covid-19 test, or a rapid antigen test (PCR or Antigen test has to be taken within 48 hours prior to departure).
Here are the requirements that U.S. citizens need to obtain in order to get a Green Pass. This information was taken from the US Embassy & Consulates in Italy website.
- A Covid-19 vaccination certificate from one of the vaccines recognized by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) which are: Pfizer-BioNtech, Moderna, Johnson and Johnson, and AstraZeneca. Your final does must be administered 14 days before your date of departure. The certificate must be written in the Italian, English, Spanish, or French language. Approved languages of the certificate are Italian, English, Spanish, and French. The certificate can be in digital or paper format and for travelers vaccinated in the United States, their certificate must bear the CDC logo.
- A Covid recovery certificate that is dated 6 months before your departure.
- A negative PCR test or rapid antigen test that was taken 2 days before departure.
Brazil
Can vaccinated Americans travel to Brazil? The country was hit very hard by the Covid-19 pandemic but the country is open for all vaccinated American tourists and even non-vaccinated ones. However, both vaccinated and non-vaccinated visitors have to show proof of a negative Covid-19 test that was taken 3 days before arrival. Upon boarding, you also need to have a Traveler’s Health Declaration filled and printed out with you too.
Are you thinking of taking your children with you? If you do, and they are under twelve, you don’t need to worry about getting them tested. Yet, if your children are older than 12, then you need to assist them with getting tested.
On your way back to the States, you need to show a negative Covid-19 test taken not more than 3 days before your flight. Even if you are fully vaccinated, you still need to get tested in a laboratory recognized by the U.S.
Why choose Brazil? The hot weather, open and friendly people, colorful and lively parades, and beautiful beaches are just a few of the many reasons to visit Brazil. The country offers you a rich dose of history, religion, culture, and sports. You also have the chance to explore the Amazon rain forest along with the fantastic tropical ocean.
Greece
Have you ever been to Greece? If you still haven’t, this summer is your chance. Unlike Italy, the Greek government has a different approach to win you over as a tourist. By choosing Greece for your summer destination, you don’t have to worry about extra testing because upon entry, you can either provide a negative PCR test (3 days before departure) or an antigen test (2 days before departure). However, you won’t need any of these tests if you’re fully vaccinated and all you need to present is your vaccination certificate.
Greece re-opened its summer season for American tourists back in April. Aside from the vaccination certificate or the negative PCR test, you must also fill in a passenger locator with your stay address in Greece. But don’t worry, this is just a precaution Greek governments take.
What can you find in Greece? As one of the most beautiful countries in the world, Greece is also one of the most desired summer destinations. The endless number of islands and crystal clear water can give you a sample of paradise. You will fall in love with the infinite coast of the Mediterranean sea, delicious food, white houses, and fantastic traditional drinks.
Bahamas
Thinking about the Bahamas as your summer destination this year? There are a couple of things you need to know before booking your flight. As of May 2021, you can enter this lovely country as a fully vaccinated tourist.
You can also forget about taking tests before and after your arrival. All you need to have is a vaccination certificate that shows you have taken your final dose 14 days before setting off.
Still, the only formal document you need to get is when you enter the country. You need to get your Bahamas Travel Health Visa within the first few days of your travel. Unvaccinated travelers have to show a negative PCR test taken less than five days before arrival in the Bahamas. You have access to 16 islands that suffered economic ups and downs during the last year. Based on your personal preferences, you’d better check what is open before booking a flight.

Barbados
Can vaccinated Americans travel to Barbados? Yes. Barbados is open for fully vaccinated tourists this year. Even though you have a vaccine, you still have to take a Covid-19 test 72 hours before arrival.
Still, upon your arrival at the airport, you have to take one more test and stay quarantined for up to two days. Your test results usually come out within those two days.
The negative test result means that your worries are over, and you are free to go and have all the fun you want. Returning a positive Covid-19 test will place you under a much longer quarantine than two days.

Belize
Belize now accepts travelers from all over the world as long as they meet the required criteria. All vaccinated tourists must bring proof of vaccination that’s dated at least two weeks before their arrival in the country. You also need to fill out a Customs and Immigration form that will be handed out during your flight.
All travelers without a vaccination certificate must present a negative PCR test that’s taken no more than 96 hours before departure or an antigen test that’s taken no more than 48 hours before departure. If you forget to take a test, don’t worry because you can just take one at the airport which costs $50.
Children under the age of 5 are exempt from testing. The older ones will get tested in Belize.
Why should you visit? If you are looking for a destination that has nature everywhere, Belize is good for you. You can explore the second-largest coral reef in the world, which is home to over 500 different living species. Furthermore, going further into the ocean, you can see the Great Blue Hole. If you are an adventurous person, you can also explore ancient Mayan ruins that lay deep in the jungle.

Bermuda
Both vaccinated and unvaccinated visitors can travel to the island of Bermuda need as long as they provide a negative Covid-19 test result 4 days before departure. But that’s not all, because travelers still need to take more tests upon arrival.
Vaccinated travelers will need to take a second test upon arrival, and followed by more tests on the 4th, 8th, and 14th days in Belize. Meanwhile, unvaccinated travelers will quarantine for 14 days in a government-designated quarantine facility upon arrival.
You can learn more about Bermuda’s Covid-19 health protocols here.
Spain
Both vaccinated and unvaccinated US travelers can visit Spain anytime and there’s also a need for a Covid-19 test or a quarantine period.
However, travelers still need to generate a QR code through the Spain Travel Health portal. Another way to do this is by downloading the SpTH app from Google Play or the App Store. There will be some health checks upon arrival but other than that, Spain is probably one of the easiest countries for US citizens o visit this year.

Great Britain
Britain might not be the best place for American tourists to visit this year. All US citizens entering the UK, whether vaccinated or not, must present a negative Covid-19 test or antigen test that’s taken 3 days before departure. Aside from that, there’s also a 10-day quarantine period although this is subject to change from time to time (check the latest updates here).
In Britain’s traffic-light risk assessment system, the British ministry ranks the U.S. side by side with most European nations on their “amber” list. During the last G-7 summit in Cornwall, Biden and Johnson started a travel task force to deal with safely reopening travel relations between the U.S. and the U.K. Yet, nothing specific was announced.
Switzerland
Vaccinated travelers just need to present their vaccination certificate upon entering the country. Meanwhile, unvaccinated travelers need to present a negative PCR test (taken 3 days before departure) or a negative antigen test (taken 2 days before departure). Quarantine periods have also been waived for all travelers but you still need to complete the online paperwork required by the Federal Office of Public Health.
The local government was generous enough to allow underaged Americans to travel to Switzerland even without vaccination certificates or Covid-19 tests as long as they’re with their parents. Children below the age of 16 don’t need a vaccination certificate or a negative Covid-19 test; those who are between the ages of 16-18 must have a vaccination certificate or negative Covid-19 test result.
If children below the age of 16 are not accompanied by adults, they must present a vaccination certificate or a negative Covid-19 test result.
Why choose Switzerland? Even though the standard of living is more expensive than the average European one, it is worth the money. When you hear Switzerland, what first springs to mind?
The country is famous for its scenic train rides, fondues, exceptional landscapes, ski resorts, and of course – its delicious chocolate. We’ve all heard so much about that chocolate. However, those are just a few reasons you should visit Switzerland so prepare for pleasant surprises.

Thailand
Can vaccinated Americans travel to Thailand? Yes, they can.
All US citizens can enter the country as long as they can provide these three requirements:
- Certificate of Entry
- Insurance policy that covers Covid-19 treatment up to the cost of $100,000.
- Negative PCR test taken 3 days before departure.
- Vaccination certificate from approved vaccines that’s dated at least 14 days before departure.
Upon arrival, travelers still need to undergo another Covid-19 RT PCR test and must quarantine in government-approved facilities or Alternative State Quarantine facilities. Here’s a list of accredited hotels and resorts: asq.locanation.com.
Vaccinated travelers who plan to go to Phuket are not required to undergo quarantine as long as they stay in SHA+ accredited hotels. However, they must stay on the island for 14 days, if they plan to visit other parts of the country afterward. With 60% of its population vaccinated, Phuket will serve as a pilot project for boosting the country’s local economy.

The advantage of vaccinated travelers is that they have expanded access to the island’s other tourist destinations. Meanwhile, unvaccinated travelers have limited access and they are required to quarantine at Covid-approved hotels upon arrival.

Romania
Are you a fan of Eastern Europe? Because Romania is a great place to relax. As of June 1, 2021, the local government has announced that it will remove some travel restrictions to non-essential travel. All travelers, whether vaccinated or unvaccinated, do not need to present a negative PCR test result upon entering the country.
The only difference is that Romania allows vaccinated travels to enter the country without undergoing quarantine as long as their last dose was administered 10 days before departure. That’s 4 days shorter compared to other countries that require the standard 14-day window for vaccinated travelers. Meanwhile, unvaccinated travelers need to undergo a 14-day quarantine.

Poland
Poland no longer requires negative Covid-19 tests for both vaccinated and unvaccinated US citizens. However, vaccinated travelers will be exempt from quarantine if their vaccines have been approved for use in the European Union. Children under the age of 12, who are not vaccinated, will be also exempt from quarantine as long as they’re traveling with vaccinated adults.
Meanwhile, unvaccinated visitors are required to undergo a 10-day quarantine period at their place of stay. Travelers can be released from quarantine earlier if, after their 7th day, they can get a negative Covid test result.

Maldives
Do you know anyone who wouldn’t want to visit the Maldives, especially after the long and exhausting year we had? Just imagine the sandy beaches and tasty cocktails the Maldives can offer you.
The island is open to all vaccinated tourists (2 doses with the last dose administered 14 days before departure) and unvaccinated tourists as long as they provide a negative Covid-19 or antigen test result taken 3 days before departure. However, unvaccinated tourists still need to undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine. The Maldives launched a new program that aims to supply enough vaccines for all locals and every foreigner who wishes to get one.
Vaccinated travelers can forgo quarantine but if they’re traveling with their unvaccinated children, the children would need to pass a Covid-19 test. The Maldivian Tourism Minister reported that half of the population and 90% of the frontline workers had their first dose of the vaccine.

Montenegro
Montenegro is a small country located in the Balkans. Visitors from any country, including the U.S., are more than welcome to stay and enjoy a seaside so beautiful, that rivals the Italian coast.
If you decide to visit the stunning Montenegro, you need one of two documents. The first one is a vaccination certificate that proves you received the final dose of your vaccine at least 7 days before your departure. Unvaccinated travelers must have with them a negative PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before the flight.
However, the CDC ranks Montenegro as a “high-risk” country. This means that travelers may be in danger of getting and spreading different variants of the Covid-19 virus.
Travelers to Montenegro will have a new place to stay from the beginning of May. This is the One and Only Portonovi in Boka Bay on the Adriatic Coast.
What can you expect when visiting Montenegro? As mentioned above, Montenegro has the same beautiful coastline as Italy. Aside from the beach, Montenegro offers an intriguing mix of ancient towns that remind us of Croatia. You can also enjoy the distinctive mountains, national parks, and wild forests.

Bulgaria
While we are still on the Balkan list of countries, have you ever been to Bulgaria? If you still haven’t, this year, you have the opportunity. All vaccinated travelers with a vaccination certificate issued at least 14 days upon arrival are free to enter.
Having a vaccine is not the only way to gain entry to this beautiful Balkan country. You can also enter if you have recovered from Covid-19 no more than six months before your arrival. A negative PCR test procured within 72 hours of entering Bulgaria, or a negative antigen test can also grant you access. Those conditions apply to all American citizens. Yet, Bulgaria is also ranked as “High-risk” by the CDC, so keep that in mind.
Nonetheless, following the example of Greece and other European countries, Bulgaria wants to attract tourists. So by choosing Bulgaria for your summer destination, you don’t have to worry about extra testing.
Why so many tourists choose Bulgaria? There are many reasons. First, Bulgaria is one of the most inexpensive countries in Europe and also the oldest one. The traditional cuisine is unbelievably tasty. The country has a heavenly nature, countless museums, and it’s also the home to the biggest cultural-historical park in the entire world. You can spend time exploring the big cities, enjoy the beauty of the Black Sea, and dive into the deep woods and natural parks that are everywhere around the country.
Israel
As of July 1, Israel will welcome vaccinated tourists and ease the Covid-19 restrictions. Yet, if you decide to travel before that, get ready for some more tests. All passengers must present a negative PCR test taken at least 72 hours before departure. Even though you have a vaccine, you won’t be able to avoid getting tested. This rule applies to people with certificates of recovery as well.
Another document you need to enter Israel is the entry statement. In this form, you will have to fill out your personal information and isolation address. Fill in that information before a second negative test with a health declaration.

Georgia
Georgia opened its borders to fully vaccinated travelers on February 1, 2021. Visitors from the United States may enter after proving they have received their final dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. If the vaccine is not a single dose, you need to bring with you proof that you took both doses.
If you still don’t have your certificate, you can enter with a negative Covid-19 PCR test taken 72 hours before departure. On your third day in Georgia, you will have to take a second PCR test.
Why Georgia? Straddling between Europe and Asia, the Black Sea, and the Caucasus mountains, you have the opportunity to choose between a beach vacation or a ski resort. This switch will not take you more than a couple of hours in a car. Georgia is also famous as one of the oldest wine-producing countries in the world.
The tasty native food (have you tried khachapuri?) and the low prices attract tourists that desire to have a mix between summer and winter vacation at the same time.
Guatemala
Can vaccinated foreigners travel to Guatemala? To enter Guatemala, you must show a negative Covid-19 PCR or antigen test 3 days before your arrival. However, you can forget these tests if you have a vaccine certificate issued at least two weeks before arrival. You will get travel restrictions if you have been to the United Kingdom or South Africa in the past two weeks.
What can you see there? Guatemala can surprise you with a combination of calmness and beauty. The Central American country is home to volcanoes, rainforests, as well as ancient Mayan villages, and buildings.
The country will charm you with its authentic colonial town of Antigua. Furthermore, the local market at Solola has almost no tourists! Not to mention the beauty of Lake Atitlan and the ruins at Tikal that go along with guided birdwatching trips you can join.

Grenada
Grenada is open to fully vaccinated tourists as long as they can show a negative test for Covid-19. You must take the test 72 hours before arrival and also take another one after entering the country. You would need to quarantine for 48 hours at a designated facility while waiting for your second Covid-19 test results.
Another important rule is the type of vaccine you have. Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, or Moderna will grant you access to the country. You can get your travel authorization applications here.
Unvaccinated individuals will also follow the same testing protocols, however, they would need to quarantine for four days while waiting for their results.
French Polynesia (Tahiti)
Can vaccinated Americans travel to Tahiti? The law in French Polynesia for vaccinated Americans is a little bit different than the other countries we review in this article. Vaccinated tourists can enter the country as long as they have spent the last 30 days in the United States and present a negative PCR test (taken 3 days before departure) or a negative antigen test (taken 2 days before departure).
If you decide to take unvaccinated children on the plane with you, they have to stay in quarantine for 10 days. Which is not a very pleasant rule or welcome.
Another requirement for entry to French Polynesia is a validation of your reason to enter the country. You should also have prepared all documents supporting your vaccination status. To confirm your vaccination status click here.
Is it worth all the trouble to visit French Polynesia? Well, that depends on your schedule, time management skills, and motivation. The time you need to get there is more than 24 hours. You will also have to change a couple of planes to get there. But once you are there, get ready for palm trees, waterfalls, crystal clear water, and divine beaches. It is your choice whether going is worth the hassle.
Cyprus
Cyprus opened its borders for vaccinated European visitors at the beginning of May. Unfortunately, citizens from the United States were not admitted up until June 4, 2021.
Now, American tourists have the opportunity to explore the island of Cyprus. Are you interested to see how the Greek and Turkish cultures share a common ground?
As a fully vaccinated American citizen, you must meet certain requirements to enter and exit the Republic of Cyprus. If you travel by plane, remember you can enter and exit only at Paphos and Larnaca airports. Still, if you choose sea travel, your ship has to set sail to either the ports of Larnaca, Limassol, or Paphos.
What’s open? Restaurants with outdoor seating, museums, galleries, and archaeological sites are open. But bars and clubs remain closed. Unfortunately, currently, beaches and nature trails are only open for exercise.
What can you see there? If you are not a cat person, I wouldn’t recommend you to get hooked on visiting Cyprus. The island is famous for its cat inhabitants that exceed the number of humans there. Wild cats have been sharing Cyprus with humans for at least 9000 years.

Ecuador
Are you considering Ecuador for your summer vacation? If you do, prepare your vaccination certificate (dated 14 days after your last dose) because now you can enter and explore the country without having to undergo testing. Moreover, you have access to the Galápagos Islands.

Furthermore, you can take your children with you on that journey without tests as long as they are under 2 years old.
Upon your arrival in Ecuador, you will have to pass an examination to prove that you have no symptoms such as cough, fever, loss of smell, and taste. If any health ministry personnel has a concern, you will have to take a rapid antigen test. In this situation, you better pray it is negative. Otherwise, you need to self-isolate for 10 days at your own expense.
Fortunately for you, all national parks and reserves are open for visitors. Ecuador is also the jumping-off point for the Galapagos Islands. Did you know how inexpensive it is? You don’t even have to deal with exchange rates because the country is using the US dollar.

Seychelles
The Seychelles was one of the very first countries in the world that welcomed vaccinated tourists. Unfortunately, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises American travelers not to visit Seychelles due to the high risk of Covid-19 exposure. The CDC has probably decided this based on the “open for all visitors regardless of vaccination status” policy Seychelles has.
Did you know that the island nation has no quarantine requirement? Yes, another red flag responsible for the CDC’s decision to rank this country as a “Level 4. However, if the “health” red lights don’t stop you from visiting this paradise on Earth, the high cost may stop you. Still, experiencing the amazing combination of unforgettable seafood and endless islands is priceless.
Croatia
Have you ever been to Croatia? If you haven’t been there yet, now is a good time. You can enter the country without quarantining as long as you have your Covid-19 certificate with you. However, there are two requirements you need to cover before that.
The first one is that you received your final vaccination dose at least two weeks before the flight. The second one is to bring with you proof of your accommodation reservation paid in full. Yes, you have to prove that you paid your hotel or guest house expenses in full.
But if you lose your certificate or don’t have one at all, you are still welcome to enter the country! However, you must present a negative PCR or antigen test taken no more than 48 hours before your arrival.
Moreover, if you stay longer than 10 days in the country, you must take a second test. All children that are less than 7 years old are exempt from a vaccine certificate or a test.
Why would you go? Did you know that Game of Thrones was filmed in Croatia’s capital? Yes, the King’s Landing is actually in Dobrovnik. The town is also famous for being one of the most iconic old towns in the world.
There are many other towns and places you can visit but definitely stop by the national park. Only one look at Plitvice Lakes is enough to make me want to book a flight right now. What about you?

Denmark
As of June 5, Denmark announced borders opening for all vaccinated American tourists but they have to be vaccinated with an EMA-approved vaccine. Like with Croatia and many other countries, you must prove that you have taken your final dose 14 days before arrival. The good thing is that you won’t need to take tests before and after your arrival in the country. Quarantine isn’t also required for vaccinated travelers.
You can also travel with your children even if they haven’t been inoculated yet. All you have to do is get them tested a couple of days before the flight.
What about unvaccinated travelers? On June 19, the local government has allowed unvaccinated US travelers to enter the country as long as they take a RT-PCR test upon arrival and have a negative result.
However, having a vaccine will simplify your trip. You can forget about justifying your trip taking a test, and going through isolation.

Anguilla is currently closed for non-vaccinated tourists, but as of July, 1st unvaccinated travelers can enter the country under a 14 days quarantine. They also need to prove their paid accommodation for at least 10 days.
Fortunately for you, all vaccinated tourists can come and enjoy their time in Anguilla now and after July 1. Before you enter the country, you need to have prepared proof that shows a negative Covid-19 test taken 3 to 5 days before your arrival. You also need to pay a fee of $300 to enter the country. Yet, after July 1, Aguilla’s tourist board will remove this fee.
