Delta CEO Ed Bastian doubled the efforts on improving Delta Airlines wifi back in 2019. The goal was to install in-flight wifi on all of its aircraft by the end of 2022.

The progress for outfitting Delta’s fleet did slow down when covid-19 caused a big blow to the entire airline industry in 2020, however, the company still remains committed to reaching its goal.

Delta has actually shifted away from Gogo wifi and plans to install Viasat wifi on more than 300 of its domestic jets by the end of the year. This includes the Airbus A321s, Boeing 737-900ERs, and Boeing 757-200s.

If you’re planning to fly with Delta in the near future, this article will give you a better understanding of Delta wifi, starting with its pricing, internet coverage, availability on Delta aircraft, monthly plans, and other important information.

Key Points:

  • Delta has partnered with Viasat Wi-Fi which is 2x faster compared to the internet service offered back in 2019.
  • More than 300 planes have been outfitted with the new Viasat Ka-Band wifi. Delta plans to equip a total of 500+ planes by the end of 2022.
  • In 2021, Delta outfitted an average of 50 planes per month from June to December 2021. This included 127 A321ceos planes, 130 Boeing 737-900 planes, and select 757-200 fleet.
  • As of today, more than 50% of domestic enplanements have been outfitted with Viasat wifi.

Is Delta Airlines Wifi Free?

Unfortunately, Delta wifi isn’t 100% free whether you’re flying Delta First, Business, Premium Select, or Economy. It’s similar to United Airlines wifi where passengers can only access messaging apps such as iMessage, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, etc. It’s very restricted too because you can only send messages so videos and photos aren’t allowed.

Two airlines that are known to have 100% free wifi are JetBlue Fly Fi and Alaska Airlines Wifi. Passengers on JetBlue and Alaska flights can stream movies, shop online, and access the web.

However, Delta wifi isn’t that expensive if ever you want complete access to the internet. For planes that have been outfitted with Viasat internet, just pay a flat rate of $5 and you’ll have high-speed internet for the entire duration of the flight. The internet speed can reach up to 25 mpbs so you can stream your favorite movies and shows without interruption.

How To Connect To Delta Wifi

Whether you want full internet access or just free access to messaging apps, the process of connecting to Delta wifi is the same. Here’s how:

  • Step 1: Turn airplane mode on then turn on your WiFi.
  • Step 2: Select “DeltaWiFi.com” from the list of available networks shown on your phone. After that, you’ll be redirected to the Delta Wi-Fi portal.
  • Step 3: In the portal, choose which type of internet access you want to have – “Free Messaging” or purchase a Wi-Fi pass. If the portal doesn’t load, just type “deltawifi.com” on your browser and reload the page.

You can save time connecting to Delta wifi by installing the Fly Delta app on your phone. Use the app to pre-connect to “DeltaWifi.com” before your flight so that when you board the plane, it will automatically connect to the wifi portal.

Delta Wi-Fi Plans

Passengers can purchase Gogo inflight Delta wifi plans (currently named Intelsat) if they want to have seamless internet access on all Delta flights.

  • Monthly Domestic Plan at $49.95 – Monthly internet access on all domestic Delta Wi-Fi-equipped flights.
  • Monthly Global Plan at $69.95 – Monthly access on all Delta Wi-Fi-equipped flights (both domestic and international).

Take note that your subscription can be used on flights that have the Viasat or the Gogo wifi. The plans automatically renew every month but you can also cancel them anytime you want.

Is Delta Wifi Free?

Bottomline

We won’t see Delta offering 100% free inflight wifi in the near future, however, their partnership with Viasat is definitely a step in the right direction. In fact, the airline’s current wifi offering of $5 per flight is already a huge upgrade compared to its day-use Gogo wifi prices.

Passengers can now stream their favorite shows, shop online, or work on their business presentations at super-fast speeds. In 2021, Delta recorded 16.9M connected devices and 427,000 browsing hours on Viasat-equipped planes.
