Earning Rewards

Take note that the Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card is specifically made for business owners which means that most of the rewards categories are focused on typical expenses that businesses have.

  • 2 miles per dollar on Delta purchases
  • 2 miles per dollar at restaurants
  • 2 miles per dollar on eligible U.S. purchases for shipping and advertising in select media
  • 1 mile per dollar on all other eligible purchases

If your spending habits lean towards personal expenses like groceries, food, and delivery services, the Delta SkyMiles Gold personal card is a better option for you.

Delta Flight Credit

Earn a $100 Delta flight credit after spending $10,000 on purchases in a calendar year (between January 1 – December 31). That means spending an average of $834 per month for one whole year.

First Checked Bag Is Free

The primary cardholder and up to eight traveling companions (a total of 9 people) will get their first checked bag for free if they are flying on Delta-marketed and Delta-operated flights under one reservation. Baggage fees typically cost $60 roundtrip so times that to 9 people means up to $500 in savings!

Delta-marketed flights are flights that are sold directly on the Delta website and app. To check, see if your flight code has the “DL” on it (Ex. Flight No. DL 241).

Meanwhile, a Delta-operated flight is a flight that’s marketed by other airlines but the aircraft and crew belong to Delta. This means that the flight number will have a different code on it. For example, a Virgin Atlantic-marketed flight that’s operated by Delta will have the “VS” letters on the flight number (Ex. Flight No. VS 603).

Priority Boarding

The primary cardholder and up to eight companions under the same reservation will get Main Cabin 1 boarding on Delta flights. Getting Delta priority boarding lets you stow your baggage in the overhead bin ahead of others so you won’t run out of space.

Main Cabin 1 comes after Pre-boarding, Delta One, First Class, Diamond Medallion, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+, and Sky Priority members.

Inflight Discount

Get a 20% statement credit when you use your card to purchase pre-purchased meals, food, alcoholic beverages, audio headsets, and other in-flight products. The credit doesn’t apply to Delta Wifi purchases.

Note: Delta Wifi offers free access to messaging apps like iMessage, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, etc. (messages only, videos and photos aren’t allowed).

Zero Introductory & Foreign Transaction Fees

The Delta Gold Business card has a $99 annual fee but new cardholders don’t have to pay anything in their first year of having the card. This means you can use that $99 to making purchases with your card and eventually earn SkyMiles.

You also don’t need to pay foreign fees when you make purchases abroad. Foreign fees typically cost between 1%-3%.

Travel & Shopping Protection

Your Delta Gold Business Card comes with multiple travel and buyer protection such as:

  • Baggage Insurance Plan: Get up to $1,250 for a carry-on and up to $500 for a checked bag for any luggage that is lost, damaged, or stolen.

  • Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance: If you didn’t use the car rental company insurance, you can use your card’s insurance to cover the cost of theft and damage incidents. Basically, your card insurance acts as a secondary coverage.

  • Purchase Protection: Get one additional warranty year on top of the original product’s manufacturer warranty of five years or less. The purchase protection only applies to items that were accidentally damaged or stolen 90 days after the date of purchase.

All these protection benefits only apply to purchases made with your Delta Gold Business Card.

Who Is This Card For?

The Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card is obviously for business owners whose spending habits revolve around advertising, shipping, and business dinners. It’s an alternative way for business owners to earn a ton of SkyMiles without having to spend thousands of dollars on flights.

The card is also for people who want a few Delta Medallion Perks, like priority boarding and free checked bags, but can’t really earn an elite status the traditional way.

If you’re a freelancer who doesn’t have an officially registered business, you can still qualify for the card as long as you’re using the card for business purposes.

However, the Delta Business Gold Card is a starter card with limited benefits so if you want more premium bonuses and perks, you might opt for the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business American Express Card or the Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business American Express Card. Just remember that bigger bonuses also mean bigger annual fees.

If I Get The Delta SkyMiles Gold Business Card, Do I Have To Fly Delta All The Time?

You don’t have to but you would lose out on earning a lot of SkyMiles. The point of having a Delta SkyMiles card is to earn 2 SkyMiles per dollar spent on Delta flights and other business expenses, and then use those miles to redeem award flights on the SkyMiles program.

SkyMiles cannot be transferred to other loyalty programs so if you want a more flexible currency, you can opt for a regular American Express Card instead.

You could get the American Express Platinum Card or the American Express Gold Card which earns Membership Rewards Points that can be transferred to other airline or hotel loyalty programs, including Delta.

Delta SkyMiles Gold Business Vs Delta SkyMiles Gold

If you’re not a business owner but still want to earn SkyMiles through everyday spending, the Delta SkyMiles Gold can be a good option for you. The business and personal versions are virtually the same in terms of annual fees and travel perks since the personal version also has a $99 annual fee and comes with a $100 flight credit, and a free checked bag.

The main difference lies in the rewards categories because the Delta SkyMiles gold lets you earn:

  • Earn 2X Miles on Delta purchases, at restaurants worldwide, including takeout and delivery in the U.S., and at U.S. supermarkets
  • Earn 1X Mile on all other eligible purchases
